The New Delhi Office of the Library of Congress is continuing a project to record Indian authors as a way of celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Library of Congress, which occurred last year. On April 17, 2000, American Ambassador Richard Celeste hosted a reception to honor the Library's Bicentennial at his residence, where the project was launched. More than 150 guests representing the worlds of literature, academia, publishing, book distribution, and libraries attended. Recording began in New Delhi on August 4. To date, 36 Indian authors in New Delhi, Madras and Bombay have been recorded, with further recordings to take place this month in Calcutta. Among the prominent authors included are Mulkraj Anand, Kaifi Azmi, Gangadhar Gadgil, Mangesh Padgaonkar, Nida Fazli and Arundhati Roy, Booker Prize winner.
